What value and emotional meaning do we assign to the objects we buy or carry with us in everyday life?

This morning, Designmuseum Denmark turns its attention to how we can take better care of the things we care about, and how affection, emotional attachment, or devotion can be used as a strategic tool.

We speak with Linda Nhu Laursen, PhD and Head of Research at the Design Lab at Aalborg University, about how a more emotional relationship with our belongings can be the key to more sustainable consumption.

The conversation takes its starting point in the museum’s current exhibition, Belongings: Affection as a Design Strategy. A sensory total installation that presents design as more than form and function, but as relationships that can extend an object’s life and create meaning in everyday life.

How do we design products we actually want to keep?

On May 20, the British designer and researcher Jonathan Chapman visits Designmuseum Denmark for an engaging and interactive talk on Emotional Durability – a concept he helped define.

Drawing on his research and practice, Chapman shares insights into how design can strengthen our emotional relationships with the things that surround us, and how affection and attachment in particular can extend the lifespan of products.

The format actively invites the audience into the conversation and opens up reflection on how we can design for more responsible and long-lasting relationships between people and things.
